Originally chartered in 2001 as the Rocky Mount Chapter, our chapter has continued to grow and morph over the years into what is known today as the Tar River Chapter of Bikers for Christ. The Tar River Chapter of Bikers for Christ is one of the very first Chapters to exist on the east coast and is the oldest chapter in North Carolina. It was through the early work of this local chapter that many of the other chapters throughout North Carolina were started. Additionally several other states that become involved with Bikers for Christ through the work that began here. Bikers for Christ was founded in 1990, and a decade later it was introduced to North Carolina through what would become the Tar River Chapter.
Nearly all of our local members attend different churches of differing denominations. Being a member of a local church who is in good standing with the pastor is a MUST in order to be a member of Bikers for Christ, just as loving all of your brothers and sisters regardless of denomination is a must in order to work together. All members must believe in and attend a church that also adheres to the basic fundaments of Christianity, agreeing on the fact that Jesus is God, the only Son of God, the only path to eternal salvation, and the King of kings and Ruler over all. Just as much as one must come together with our brothers and sisters in Christ over the stuff that unites us, we must also be willing to set aside those areas that cause division. Denominational divisiveness has no place inside Bikers for Christ. We are here to promote the Gospel of Christ, not a particular flavor of church style or format.
The chapter was originally started by Avery Moore, as the Rocky Mount Chapter, and existed as such for several years. Through the years we have had several name changes while the chapter grew, and have had several chapter elders as well. Avery stepped down from leadership for a season in order to deal with the lengthy adoption of two of his children, which was immediately followed by a kitchen accident in which his youngest son sustained 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns that covered 80% of his body. As anyone who has ever gone through either of these experiences can tell you, life goes a little nuts for a while, and it was only compounded by these two things happened at the same time. Having weathered the worst of the storm, Avery has stepped back into the position of Chapter Elder and is looking forward to many more great things being accomplished through this chapter.
Covering the greater Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson Counties, the chapter has been called by God to serve the community and to share the Gospel of Jesus with all we meet. Biker, homeless, whore, or lifelong church attender, Jesus died for us all, and loves us all the same. No matter where you have come from, no matter what you have done, the Gospel of Jesus has the power of restoration, redemption, and grace.
